Let’s face it, security awareness training is often experienced as mandatory without excitement or joy. In addition, on top of your day-to-day work, the deadlines and stress, you don’t necessarily have the time to watch security videos.
The resistance and low levels of engagement in security awareness training increases the risk for social engineering attacks by cyber criminals. Securing your digital footprint is no longer a 9 tot 5 job, but it is a way of life. It involves the choices we make and the decisions we take. It involves assisting people to adopt new habits, habits which are rooted in safe and secure online behaviour.
You manage people, but you guide and lead people through challenges. Helping people to get out of their comfort zone requires persuasion and influence, which are skills rooted in emotional intelligence. If you convince people through fear will only result in people trying to reduce their emotion of fear instead of addressing the root cause of human vulnerability.
Why emotional intelligence matters
Emotional intelligence is about how you relate to yourself, to others and to your environment. Emotions are a consequence of your thought process and shape your cognitive behavioural sequence. In plain language, your thoughts trigger your emotions and your emotions drive your behaviour. It does not mean you act on impulse or do not use your rational part of the brain, not at all. You need both. Imagine your cognitive ability, your IQ, is your elevator in life. Your EQ, emotional intelligence, is your trajectory upwards or downwards. Your IQ deals with strategic and long-term while your EQ deals with immediate challenges and helps you develop the agility you need to navigate the VUCA world. VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity.
In this webinar, I go into more depth with the other panellists about why emotional intelligence matters in building healthy security cultures, why training alone is not enough and how to break down organizational silos. Implementing a transformational change program in which security is ingrained in every process, system and mindset will help reduce the risk for business disruption.
Security awareness training done right
Security awareness training has been part of some organizations for decades and for others only in the last few years. However, the big challenge still remains in how to ensure it’s being done effectively and not just a box to tick off for the compliance team.
In another Back to Basics webinar partnership with the folks at Side Channel and Wizer-Training, Brain Haugli moderated a fantastic panel discussion from leading cybersecurity experts Dutch Schwartz, Ryan Cloutier , Wizer’s own founder Gabriel Friedlander and me!

3 Different Ways I can help you
What if you could learn more without booking a discovery call with a stranger who, in your map of the world, is going to try to sell you something? Highly agree! That’s why I developed a virtual value proposition, explaining briefly in videos what problems I help my clients solve in three different ways.
- Access both virtual and in-person experimental learning trainings focused on building human resilience. Custom scenarios specific to your industry and sector.
- Need a little more help? My individual or group coaching plans can help you learn to lead your team through uncertain times and take them from chaos to clarity.
- My consultancy services in strategic stakeholder engagement and communication will help you drive employee resiliency as a transformational change program.
I also believe in talking less and listening more, but your time is precious. Why would you give me your time if you don’t know if I would be able to help you. Hey, I don’t even know, as I am not every business’ cup of tea either. But what I do know is that if you sign up for my free resiliency course below, you will become clear quickly if you want to go to the next stage and see if we have business chemistry.
I invite you to click on my value proposition, explore my offerings and course, and decide whether you are ready for the Discovery Call step where we both decide if Thrive with EQ is the right fit.
