Let’s face it, security awareness training is often experienced as mandatory without excitement or joy. In addition, on top of your day-to-day work, the deadlines and stress, you don’t necessarily have the time to watch security videos.

The resistance and low levels of engagement in security awareness training increases the risk for social engineering attacks by cyber criminals. Securing your digital footprint is no longer a 9 tot 5 job, but it is a way of life. It involves the choices we make and the decisions we take. It involves assisting people to adopt new habits, habits which are rooted in safe and secure online behaviour.

You manage people, but you guide and lead people through challenges. Helping people to get out of their comfort zone requires persuasion and influence, which are skills rooted in emotional intelligence. If you convince people through fear will only result in people trying to reduce their emotion of fear instead of addressing the root cause of human vulnerability.


Why emotional intelligence matters

Emotional intelligence is about how you relate to yourself, to others and to your environment. Emotions are a consequence of your thought process and shape your cognitive behavioural sequence. In plain language, your thoughts trigger your emotions and your emotions drive your behaviour. It does not mean you act on impulse or do not use your rational part of the brain, not at all. You need both. Imagine your cognitive ability, your IQ, is your elevator in life. Your EQ, emotional intelligence, is your trajectory upwards or downwards. Your IQ deals with strategic and long-term while your EQ deals with immediate challenges and helps you develop the agility you need to navigate the VUCA world. VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity.
