I was privileged to design and facilitate an EQ (Emotional Intelligence) Crisis Simulation Workshop for the German Marshall Fund’s Leadership Lab with rising leaders from Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. The workshop included two half-days interactive crisis simulations and individual feedback sessions on the Fellow’s EQ-i 2.0 Survey Assessment. The EQ-i 2.0 model surveys leaders, groups, and individuals to develop an awareness of how they can leverage their EQ and develop personal leadership skills through enhanced self-awareness and social intelligence. Exercising personal leadership by understanding how emotional intelligence can help you Thrive as a leader is now more critical than ever.
People are often oblivious to our bias that influences the way they solve problems and make decisions, a bias that is conditioned by their environment, culture, and beliefs. That’s why tailored crisis simulation scenarios can help bring emerging leaders to develop a holistic approach in managing and navigating crises and challenging security environments. Why crisis? Only when people feel pressure do they revert to their unconscious bias and short-cut behavioral patterns that are no longer fit for the changing world we live. I use the methodology of role-playing through uniquely designed personality types to increase participant’s levels of empathy. It’s is an excellent technique for people to become aware of their blind spots that drains them from their mental energy and emotional bias, cluttering their judgment and decision-making during heightened stress.
It was great to see the creative flow and innovative solutions the fellows develop to the cyber crisis simulation scenarios through leveraging their individual and group emotional intelligence. During the one-on-one feedback sessions, we develop a specific roadmap with SMART-actions (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely) to work on their EQ blind spots. We also discussed personal lessons learned from the crisis simulation scenarios and how they can apply it in their professional environments and their community projects they are working on.
Nadja impeccably designed and facilitated a two-part online EQ training for a dozen emerging leaders from the Eastern Partnership countries. She was a real pleasure to work with and I greatly appreciated her creativity, good sense of humor, openness to dialogue and flexibility to build a training program for a diverse group of individuals. Through a mix of crisis simulations, role play, presentations on how emotions impact the ability to make decisions and one-on-one coaching, Nadja helped each of the members of the group become better decision-makers and increase their impact in their communities. Nadja is a passionate coach and leader, and an inspiration to all those she helps grow. I strongly recommend her to any organization that works on leadership development.
